I acquired these two African masks at my favorite consignment store that was part of an estate sale for a deceased collector of Africana artwork. I'm sure they were made for the tourist trade, but I would love to know more about the country/region, style, and possibly the artists who created them. They are not signed and are quite distinct in style from each other. The first one with the crown is quite heavy, carved from a dense tropical wood. I've seen others like it in a similar style that were sold in an estate sale in France several years ago while investigating on the internet. I know more about Native American masks than African, but I an slowly learning more as I read and investigate about African masks.
Can anyone out there tell me more about these two masks, particularly the first one with the crown? I just love them and I always want to know more the art I acquire and display in my home. (Amazing that there are no categories pertaining to African art at all in this website. That should definitely be fixed.)
These masks are typically made in Kenya and Ghana. No particular tribal/cultural significance. See one on eBay item # 383150829543.
