Been in the family for years, I suspect my Dad got it in the early 20th century, possibly belonged to his mother has she was a dressmaker, she could have had this any time from 1890 onwards. Not sure about the serial number, the end character doesn't make sense. Any one able to tell me when this was made?
Wow thank you Keramikos. Looking at the machine again in the clear light of day I can see that the last number is a six, so that riddle is solved. I also tried to unwrap the original manual, but bits fall of when I tried and it doesn't look like the cover is still there. It has been rolled up for at least fifty years, probably longer. Thank you ever so much for all the information you have given. I was planning to sell it, but I think I will keep it now and make it a feature of the room instead of hiding it away.
Hi Keramikos
Once again thank you for your help, that was really kind of you. I have decided that the machine will be kept. The date of manufacture puts it around the time that My Grandmother would have been born, and being a dressmaker, struggling to make ends meet, I can easily see that it probably was brought second hand by her around 1895-1910. We had planned to put it on e bay but now that I have reasonable evidence to suggest it has been in the family for 130 years, I don't see I have the right to get rid of it. I shall try and make a feature from it, a little bit of careful cleaning etc and it might look really nice somewhere. So again, many thanks for your help.
Stay safe.
