$8 Kutani Chozan Sake set

This partial Kutani Chozan sake set was an estate sale find for $8, so I couldn't pass it up. The mark on the bottom is the mark of the Kutani Chozan studio. The set is missing two cups and one of the remaining ones has a chip but the rest of the set and the tomobako are in nice shape. I had not seen sake flasks in this shape before, which drew my attention, and I think this set has some age too, maybe 1950s-60s.... I have since seen similar shaped flasks called "double gourd" flasks, but not sure of the origin of that term. Perhaps this set was brought back to the U.S. by someone who lived in Japan at one time, perhaps a member of the American armed forces. The set was probably used a fair amount due to the missing and chipped cups. I don't have any Kutani ware, so nice to add some to my collection for so little money. I will have to start looking to see if I can find some replacement cups. Too bad that the cups are painted to match the flasks. I found the mark on this site:
