Nice and rare model!! this train was produced from 1934 to 1939, i would say yours is from 34/35 because in 1935 this set was equipped with a bell and a buzzer that required a 5 rail track to operate, because you dont have the original motor, and if you cant get one, i suggest using any other salvaged motor that would fit (Lionel/Ives/Marklin/Bing/KBN, etc) and use the power supply from the replacement motor, the original Rheostate that you have migh damage other type of motors.

      History of Hoge trains:

Hoge Mfg. Co., founded in 1909 in Manhattan, NY by Hampden Hoge, who left the company by 1919. Hoge produced only office supplies until 1931, when Henry Katz dissolved his company and came to manage Hoge's new model railroad and toy division.

The company contracted Mattatuck for the construction of their toy designs. Toys included stamped steel passenger and animated circus cars as well as electric and clockwork trains & locomotives.

The line ceased in 1939 and Hoge was bought and dissolved by Mattatuck in 1958. The name is currently the property of Robert Hoge, a Hoge toy collector but no direct relation to the original founder.

      Great Find!

Thanks Lata for comments and all the information! I really do appreciate it. When I was bidding on it I knew that it did not have the engine but I thought it was unusual enough to go after. I thought about putting another motor in it but would love to have an original motor, but that might not be possible. I would have to figure out how to mount a Marx or Lionel motor in such a way that I did not have to drill holes or take away from the original creation. Regardless, I love the train and now I know the history and that just makes it even better. Thanks to everyone that has looked and loved and know that I APPRECIATE you all!
