I love collecting old valuable items like in the first 2 pictures, I have many more items from the 30's and 40's but these are my favorite. But the reason I am sending this message is because of my last 2 pictures. I recently bought these to signs for $180 and was wondering what their actual worth is. I don't really care if I spent more than what they are worth since I am now moving into automotive collections, like my 1984 944 I have in my garage. It's not really old, but it is classic, lol. Anyway, these signs are both dated 3/10/1947, which when I researched them online most of them are also dated 3/10/1947. Is this just when a majority of them were made, or is it a scam, or what? I would just like to know more about them so when people come over to ask, I know what to tell them. These 2 signs are really the only thing I don't know much about since the information on the internet is very limited. I even called Rick's Restorations to see if they could possibly tell me what they were normally worth but all I got was the answering machine.
If there is anyone out there who sees this and knows what the value of these signs are I would also greatly appreciate it.
Thank you,
Ray Russell
I've got a spot on my wall for a SKYCHIEF sign but the ones I've seen (hands-on) recently have been in worse shape and about 180 a piece. Skychief was introduced in the late '30s as high octane, premium fuel. A quick ebay scan will give you a little insight on value , at least what others will pay, once you weed out repros.
Well as far as I can tell these are original. I am very accurate with WWII items and know how to spot fakes. But this is something new to me, but as far as I can tell there is real genuine wear on these signs. Everybody that I have called either only knows about the fakes or won't tell me unless I let them restore them or sell them.
But I appreciate the information and will further my search of the value and see if these are 100% real.
I believe they are real and they are in great shape. I wouldn't worry about restoration, just a little polish and enjoy. I did see a couple at a recent antique fair that were trying to fetch $300 and $350.
Awesome, well it is good to know. The wife and I are planning on taking a trip to Antique Archaeology in Nashville since we are only 45 minutes away. Might find more vintage automotive signs just waiting for a new home.
don't forget to post 'em !!!
