Piece: 485 = Covered Dish

Does the "S" mean special piece or sage green clay?
Value?
Thanks!

I thought the "S" was for special piece. "V" for vellum, "T" for trial, "Z" for matte and "X" for an imperfect piece sold ata reduced price.
There were also O,G &P that were indicators of the clay body: "O" for Olive, "G" for ginger and "P" for soft porcelain.
"S" meant "smear" (dull finish) p. 219 Appendix 5; "When an impressed "S" is found alone, it indicates a piece throwon for demonstration, perhaps from a prominent visitor". From Rookwood Pottery book by Anita J. Ellis
Hi dholdefer! I'm just wondering if this is a 'smear' glaze?
The incised mark ("S") would have been made just after the pot was made, long before it was glazed, but the glaze may have been matched to the "S" inscription. What I wrote, came out of a book. I have never heard of a "smear" glaze...
