found in loft any ideas please as I'd love to know more about where they came from. There's also a tan one and a material one too

Looks like a standard issue steel pot. The helmet liner goes inside this. These are heavy and not much good except for holding water so you can shave or cook a hobo stew out of C-rations.
They sure were almost nothing against shrapnel and won't even stop a .22 long rifle bullet. They did keep your hair dry in the rain.
The M1 helmet was one of the best helmets ever made. Was in production from 1941 up to the mid 80's. It was not designed to protect from high speed bullets or high energy shrapnel. Penetration by same is not relevant as the energy in high energy projectiles would rip your head of even if the helmet was not penetrated, Force equals mass times acceleration. I lived with my M1 for about 5 years in the Vietnam years. It weighed 2.8 pounds and we all got used to it.
CORRECTION: We did not all get used to it, that is why we wore the cloth jungle hats. We were all issued the steel pot and I toted one around for 10 years 1967 to 1977. Even had to keep it when I was on duty requiring civilian attire and not living on a military base. They weren't even good for putting a plant in because there was no drainage.
Good for snowball fights.
