Is this trunk anything special? Peeling paper inside , Looks like it could have had black paint applied to outside. One latch still works

unfortunately no, this is a very common and inexpensive trunk made by hundreds of trunk makers of the time, from early 1880's to early 1900's
Well there is one possibility
But it is a stretch

the front latches were patented in 1872, the tin cross slat clamps on the top were patented in 1880 by C. A. Taylor, the black color or japanning as it was called was a heavy black lacquer used on metal, the embossed tin flower pattern was probably gold in color.
