My daughter found this in a thrift store and fell in love with it. Picked it up for $40. It's so sweet and we want to know more. Have no experience in antique trunks so if anyone can tells the maker, the age, the materials, etc. we'd like to know. We don't want it appraised, we just want more info. We've seen a couple like it for sale on e-bay, but the ads are only 'presumed" antique, wood and tin. Was it customary to past these little illustrations inside? Leather is long gone, but are these tin? Thank you in advance for comments/insights.

This is a very common trunk could have been made from mid 1880's up to early 1900's, yes embossed tin that came in many different patterns, hardwood slats usually elm, maple or other, very few trunk makers used oak as it was very expensive, I don't believe that the lock is original to the trunk, almost all trunks had lithographs in them of no particular meaning, as for a maker without a label hard to say, many trunks like this never had labels, this style was made by hundreds of makers at the time, the tin slat clamps on the wood slats were patented in 1880 by C.A. Taylor but were used for many years.

Thanks again. one last question. What does the number on the bottom mean?

Not sure, it may have been a model or style number, I have seen them on a few trunks.
