These yunomi are 3.75" and 3.5" high, with plastic lids. The glaze is crackled and the yunomi are slightly oval shaped. They are marked with a Japanese alphabet mark and a "Made in Japan" label. The lids are almost like glass, very hard and thin. The box is very dry, brittle and has come apart in places. The box is also labeled in Japanese and English.

The mark on the bottom is a Kutani mark, but I have not been able to identify the studio, yet. It may be a generic mark. the decoration is on one side, only and appears to be a transfer that has then been hand painted. I found these in a town about 35 miles from where I live. The seller thought they were tea and sugar containers.

This is the first time I have seen yunomi with plastic lids, but once I knew they existed, I found several more examples. I think most date to the 1950s-1960s.

I like lidded yunomi. I have seen some with black glass lids too.
A question Kevin: why is one often smaller than the other?

Thanks Karen! Meoto yunomi are a traditional wedding gift for newlyweds, the larger cup for the husband and smaller cup for the wife. I guess the thinking was that husbands are typically physically larger than their wives, so drink more? I've never found a rationale mentioned for the difference in size in my research.

      OK, thanks, I always wondered!

A bit more about meoto yunomi. Meoto means "married couple". Someone asked me, "If meoto yunomi are traditional gifts for newlyweds, do they end up with multiple meoto yunomi sets as gifts?". I did not and do not know the answer to this question, so if anyone does know, I would appreciate hearing from you.
