This great desk set from Japan is unused and arrived in it's original box.
The inscription on the front states it is a commendation by the Minister of Education and is dated May 21 1936. Perhaps this was a gift for retirement or job well done or as a special thanks commemorating a visit. I will probably never know.
I believe it has been made in Japan as they had all of the skills to manufacture something like this, but it may have been imported and reboxed.
The ink wells are cut crystal and the base and well lids are made from polished black glass. The pen stands are an early Bakelite-like plastic, and the metal fittings appear to be brass plated steel.
    Measures about 16cm by 10cm.
It was immediately adopted by a young history buff in the household who fancies himself a gentlemanly type. Unfortunately that same young man has crap writing so I won't let him use it with ink and a quill. Cruel? Nah, just a realistic parent who would like her desk set to say pristine.

Gorgeous elegant antique desk set with a retro yet contemporary look, love those deco hinges on the crystal inkwells. Hands off young man, wait a few years lol :)

Thanks Jenni, it's a pretty cool object. An the young man is 19 and still writes like a (ahem) 6 year old. I doubt it will ever get better. He got that from me. My writing is atrocious and I'm happy to text or type!!

Stunning, and simple, but very Regal

Fantastic set, so stylish! Yep, better to keep it unused, put your youngster into Japanese calligraphy and succeed in the art before he thinks using it ;-D

Thanks for liking this set Pascale.
Calligraphy would be good but I think there would be more ink blots and smears than script!

Yeah, hearing you Eileen! My boy is great at the literary and movie arts, but can't write well at all.
I was really happy to find this old set as you say pristine, dated, and wonderful generally.
      Thanks!
