This is my second piece by Japanese glass artist Kokoro Yoshii, and as I said in a previous post about her it's hard to capture it's beauty and technicality in photos.
The piece is made with two glass parts. The base appears to have been cast from clear glass that has been hollowed out and shaped by hand tools. The hollow is rough and there is a shaped lip for the lid to lock onto. The outside is very matte, but I am not sure what technique was used to achieve that perhaps it was from the casting.
The top is a glass maker's marvel. It has been blown or perhaps cast from a clear glass with bluish gray swirls. It's hard to see in the photos but two thin triangles in red have been included in the glass.
The dome has then been shaped internally with tools to show a small world. Near the rim are houses, an icy mountain, the red sails, and above them all floats a night sky with stars. The world has been made by precisely removing tiny bits of glass, and by making different textures the stars appear to float. The outside of the dome has been polished.
I really can't impress upon you just how amazing this piece is. Photos can't show it.
It is not large at around 7cm diameter so the work is incredibly fine.
The seller called this Inner World, but I am not sure if that is their name for the work or the artist's name for it. It suits. It is an engaging and absorbing piece of art.
It is proudly signed on the bottom KOKO.
I'm proud to own this rare and exquisite work.
