I have what appears to be a Mdina "lollipop” vase. I think the pattern is tiger. What I'm curious about is whether this is actually a vase since there is no opening at the top. There's no way that it can hold a flower. Is it still considered to be a vase? Or is there another name for it?

Could be called a paperweight depending on its size, or a minimalist figurine in a modern style...?

This piece is 8.25" tall and 5.5" wide. Looks just like other Mdina vases I can find except for the fact that it isn't a vase. It looks like the smooth, rounded top shape is deliberate. It also doesn't appear to be a 2nd. Very pretty and it is signed on the base with the etched "Mdina" (signature looks like that on other pieces).
Very doubtful that it's a paperweight. This company makes them but they are definitely lower to the ground and more of a rounded shape. This would be way too unstable because of the height and shape. The base is narrow (about 2.5" wide x 1.5") so it would easily tip over, especially with the imbalance in the weight (light at the top but very heavy at the base).
I did a lot of research before I posted this. Really assumed that I'd be somewhat embarrassed by how quickly someone would know and post the answer that I was unable to find myself. BUT, based on your responses, I feel a little better. Looks like so far, we're all a little stumped by this piece. So, this may actually take a Mdina expert to solve the mystery. I know there are collectors of Mdina art glass so maybe one of them will spot this...?!?!?
Hi there, sometimes these pieces never had an opening or they were closed over again during manufacture.
They are mainly decorative pieces not really meant for flowers.
The additional clear glass 'Wings' on these and other Mdina vases, gave way to the term 'Sidestripe'. So what you have is a Mdina Sidestripe Lollipop vase in the Tiger pattern.

I love finding things (my treasure hunts) and researching but it is SO nice to have someone knowledgeable to verify what you think you know (like the "Tiger" pattern and the "Lollipop"). But also to expand knowledge--for example the use of the term "Sidestripe" in place of "Wings".
But most of all, it is wonderful when someone has the expertise to clear up the mysteries. Like a non-vase "vase"!!
So, all of this information is very appreciated. Thank you again for sharing and helping me (and maybe others) learn from you.
