This large stoneware bowl is about 10.75" (23 cm) in diameter x 4.5" (11.5 cm) high, weighs 4 lbs 5 ounces (1.96 kg) and is unmarked. I bought this for $1 about 15 years ago (2005-ish) from a neighbor who was selling her mother's household items. The sale was in the house my neighbor grew up in and, when she married, they bought the house next door to her parents' house. My neighbors were preparing to sell the parents' home, as both had passed some time ago, so they just opened the doors of the house for the sale of the contents. Very informal. I just happened to be walking by and saw the sale sign. My neighbor was in her early 70s and she told me that she remembered her mother making bread using this bowl as long as she could remember, so this bowl probably dates to before the 1940s. Personally, I would have passed this down in the family as an heirloom.. Not sure if this was made by a local Midwest USA pottery or if it was by one of the large commercial pottery makers. Not sure what can be told about these old stoneware bowls as I sure that every household had some. Does anyone know anything about these old stoneware bowls?

Here in scandinavia we call them milkbowls. Today People use them as fruitbowls.

Kwqd you are most welcome. They would put the fresh milk in the bowls and let it sit until the cream was on top. The they would take the cream and beat it into butter. They can look like the one you have and sometimes also more shallow. A plain but beautiful thing they used in the kitchen back in the days. :)

Great information Elisabethan. You can tell that the owner valued it greatly as it is in really nice shape.
