Old Rosary...I’m Guessing Here, Could Use Input Please

My Mom’s 77 yr old neighbor gave this to me, along with some other pieces. It belonged to his wife’s mother, and he has no idea where it came from or why she had it. I think it looks like an old rosary. My Mom thought not, as it didn’t look like my Dad’s rosary that was huge and solid sterling. He was raised Catholic, we are Lutheran. So I am clueless.

I couldn’t even tell what color the beads were, and the other elements were so coated with gunk there was no detail visible. They were just black blobs. I soaked in Dawn, then a light buff and could see they were marked sterling. They are quite detailed once one can see them!

It measures 13” closed from end to end. There is no clasp. The beads are fairly well worn as is the sterling leading me to believe it was well used.

Would this be an old piece? Is it truly a rosary? As always, your input is always valuable and educational!
