Well — I just got my latest trunk and this baby is my DREAM trunk!! Martin Maier has several styles of trunks that they made. They had oak slat trunks, embossed tin covered trunks, and leather covered trunks. Leather covered trunks are more rare & were considered to be the high end of trunks at the time.

Then there is THIS trunk! It’s a leather covered trunk, but with a few really cool twists. It has decorative nail patterns on the ends, and most of the ends of the slats are tin covered, but the tin is curved. Doesn’t sound like much, but I only know of one other MM trunk with curved tin slat covers. It also has metal bands covering the centers of the front and top slats. Again, only one other MM that I’ve seen with this feature.

Then there is the final unique feature. This trunk has Martin Maier patented hinges, fairly common, but on my trunk the hinges were installed UPSIDE DOWN AND BACKWARDS!!

I can only imagine that it must have been a new guy on the assembly line!

Anyway — I hope you enjoy this amazing MM.

Big shout out to Brian McWhirter for finding it for me. (He knew it was one I’ve been looking for, and is a good enough friend to let me have it)

My good God Damon, That is indeed a WOW! Fantastic nail work! Even the leather pattern is something to behold. It would have been quit the looker when this baby was new. Love the metal bands and the extra top end bumpers that's a lot of them.
Great find, a truly impressive piece to say the least!!

Hey I'm glad that you got it, happy that I could help you acquire it, it was to far for me to drive and I'm not going to pay for shipping, I think this is a really rare MM as I myself have only seen one other and that was done by Jim Cardoza eight or so years ago, what blows my mind on this one, is how could a trunk of this high caliber get out of the MM factory with the hinges on upside down and they appear to be original nails and rivets, not like someone took them off and unknowingly put them back on incorrectly. but its a fantastic trunk so glad you got it and can't wait to see what you do with it, Brian.

      Thanks Drill.

I saw that one too. I think I have all I can handle for now! I really wish there was some way to save the designs from the leather that wasn’t as time consuming as your method!

I have to come back to this MM trunk, I know everyone probably thinks, oh another Martin Maier but this isn't just another MM. Anyone that knows me knows that MM trunks are my favorite trunks especially with the MM hardware and I have several in my collection. This is a very uncommon and super high end trunk, first it's leather covered, how many leather covered MM have you seen with MM hardware, I would bet not many, also the dark bands on the wood slats are actually heavy gauge steel which you rarely see on any trunk let alone MM trunks, the metal end caps on the wood slats are rounded rather the square like on 99.9% of MM trunks, also the red brass lock, for some reason MM put cheap non brass locks on 90% of there trunks, along with the fancy nail work and this is the only trunk I have ever seen with five pieces of MM hardware on the top end edges including the corners which gives it a distinctive look, make no mistake this is a very rare Martin Maier and I can only hope to find another for my own collection but I'm not going to hold my breath, LOL!
