      Your penny is copper plated zinc...the copper plate has worn through, may have also been exposed to chemicals...if you have an electric stove, place on coils, turn red hot and zinc will pour out in puddle, and you'll have the copper shell left...that's what it is worth in copper....

      You have a oxidizing zinc penny. Must have been on the ground.
