Pretty Welz Thorn Handle Basket

Striking, splashed multi coloured basket by Welz. Three casings - crystal over colour splash over white. Foot is solid and has a broken pontil. If the pontil could not be seen when on display then it was easier to finish it this way - otherwise it was smooth polished so as to be visually unobtrusive. It also saved time and labor costs. Handle is looped with many thorn projections - painful to carry with your fingers, so I think it was merely designed to be decorative and not have a commercial or practical function. Quite heavy for its size. Height 16 cms and width 14 cms across the ruffles. Three main colors - blue, yellow and pink. Early 20th century.
