We had dense fogs here in Birmingham in the 1950s when I was at school traffic and trains were stopped, visibility was often below 10 yards, it sometimes persisted for up to 3 days if the temperature was below freezing it would cause a coating of ice on trees and power lines . In 1956 Britain introduced the clean air act to reduce the frequency of fogs or smog as it was mostly known with smokeless fuel and steam trains belching out smoke were replaced by deisal and electric.
