My great uncle found it in a junk store 60 years ago . It had approximately 6 coats of black paint on it. He refinished it to the original condition. It’s been past down in my family for years. I’ve had it since my father passed. It’s always been a topic of conversation, but no one really knows what kind of chair it is. It has diamonds or glass eyes, have never had them checked. It’s very sturdy , no nails in it. Curious of its history.

It is a gargoyle barrel chair. They were quite popular for a period of time. Like a fad that faded. Just research, vintage gargoyle barrel chair, you should find plenty of them all different designs depending on the maker.

Elisabethan - Your question is impossible to answer without actually seeing the chair in person. It very well could be from the era you suggest, however, without seeing the chair, the joinery etc it is difficult to say from a picture. One thing I question with it being that old is that many reproductions have been made over the years and this chair doesn't show wear where it should. That is another good reason for an in person examination.

Its actually a take on a savonarolla chair, although this is a newer version as originally the X frame legs looked that old way but this one has ordinary legs mainly. The shape of the upper frame is savonarolla but the base is just regular legs. North wind chairs are mainly blowing air or wind but this is a regular grotesque mask. Nice chair however.
