    Hello everyone!!
I just added this antique Victorian era brass "Fox and Whip" doorstop, or hall porter as these are referred to by many. It measures 15 1/8" tall. The head measures 4 3/4" wide, 5 1/4" from nose to back and 3 3/8" tall. It weighs nearly 7 lbs. This came from an estate in Lexington, KY. Most, if not all, of these were made in England. These were very popular in England, especially during the Victorian era. There are several versions of this doorstop, but this version is the most difficult to come by and the oldest version that I'm aware of. This version highly details the pupil of the eye, where later versions were just a smooth eye. Later versions also had feet under them, or a cast iron base. On some later versions, the head and base were made completely of cast iron, with the exception of the whip, which is always made of brass. Peerage England produced a lot of these, with cast iron bases, from the early 1900's on. In fact, I've even seen newly manufactured versions of this for sale recently.
I do not know the maker of this one, however, I can clearly make out an "R" and and "H" inside of the fox head. This one was in VERY sad condition when I took possession of it and I had to give it a good cleaning and polishing. The maker of this version applied black enamel inside of the ears of these to highlight the ears. As bad of condition as this one was in, it still retains 80% of the black enamel inside the ears, which I was very delighted to see. I'm very happy to add this Victorian brass fox and whip hall porter (doorstop) to my collection.

Thank you all for stopping in for a look!!

    Scott
