It's a "Botellon De Barro," a traditional Mexican pottery water jar, from Tonala, in the state of Jalisco.

This particular type of pottery is called canelo (cinnamon) brunido. Canelo for the colors the clay slip turns after firing, brunido (polished) for the fact that the clay is burnished, rather than glazed. Because it is unglazed, it is not water-proof, but designed to keep water cool by evaporation. Not good for use as a vase, but ideal for use as a water cooler, where electricity isn't handy or available.

These water jugs come with a matching cup that fits upside down over the neck of the pot.
