Interesting modern Murano bowl. It is clear glass over pink with silver mica flecks or spangles over white. The edges are cut in a spiral / twist. The base has been polished flat and there is a numbered stamp [914] and another with country of manufacture [Italy]. Not sure that the pestle is a marriage with the bowl because the pestle is silver fleck within clear glass. Small but heavy. Height is 3.5 cms and 15 cms at widest point. Purchased at auction in mid 1980s. Was it designed to be purely decorative?

This would have to be decorative! For the kitchen that has everything, perhaps?
I can't imagine it would stand up to the punishment of being regular kitchen mortar & pestle...I have a couple of robust stone/marble ones for grinding spices etc. There are vintage glass examples but they're very plain in design.

Undoubtedly you are correct again, IronLace. It is too small and the projections are just asking to be broken off, if taken anywhere near the kitchen. Actually it does reside in the glass cabinet, so as not to tempt fate it will continue to be kept there. It's pretty and decorative!
