I recently aquired boxes of my Grandparent's & Great Grandparents things.....I found this oil lamp in one of those boxes & although I realize its not worth much since the handle is broken off....I am still interested in learning more about it none the less..... it has "Patent Applied For" on the wick adjuster, & says "Patent June 30th 1868" on the bottom.....
I can be contacted at whrsthebech@yahoo.com

I believe that you have an alcohol lamp . It produced a smokeless flame. Used by druggists. science lab, or as a heat source for a chafing dish heater. Could also be used to vaporize something medicinal for inhalation. cap put the flame out and kept the alcohol from evaporating.
