interesting little 'brown jug' crockery pot, #2

Well, at least *I* think its interesting? :-)

This little-ish pottery jug measures about 6" tall and across its bottom, and has a "2" stamped on it opposite the handle. The bottom is unglazed, I am unsure if the black discoloration there is evidence of its past usage (over a fire? certainly not??) or anything else, but whatever it is doesn't seem to rub off. There is a lip inside its top opening suggesting it might have once had a lid, however there is no provision in that rim (or indeed any sort of 'spout' whatsoever) opposite the handle that would have helped enable actually pouring anything from it. If it did have a specific purpose I'm unaware of it...?
