I found a great pair of AO aviator Gold sunglasses that have no mark on the lens at a flea market bargain bin today. I scooped them up when I felt their weight, I could tell the lenses were glass. They have bent but not curled arms simply stamped USA on the inside. The underside of the top bar is stamped AO 58 a square 14 Made In USA . Can anyone help me date them or share someone who may know about them.

Those are American Optical and made up in Mass. You could write directly to them or see if they have online archives at https://aoeyewear.com. They have been in business since the mid 1800's so they may well have archives to show the numbering sequence and years made.

thats why I picked them up. I thought they were aviators too, they frlt like aviators :) Now Im interested in how old they are because they predate their branded lenses. the arms are stamped USA not AO. I'm waiting to see if the AO Museum curator writes me back

Makes me think of a pair of military aviators I picked up in SE Asia in the early 1970s. Maybe the best pair of sunglasses I ever owned. I was playing frisbee in a local park after I got out of the Army and they were not really good for running in, so I took them off and set them on a manhole cover in the middle of the field we were playing in and out of the whole large field I ran right over them and broke them while chasing a frisbee. The cracking of those glass lenses is still vivid to me today.
