I had this since about the early 80's. Never seen one with a top before. Someone must of put a light coat of stain on it and hinges and a chain for the top. Do not know what it would be worth, because most of them would have been thrown in a fire.
There have been several of these boxes in various condition on Ebay in the past year. A top alone which had been repaired and varnished went for $54.66 on March 6th. A box with its top which appeared to be in good condition sold for $99.99 on March 21st. A crate without a top and which appeared to possibly have some rot damage was listed for $150.00, but it did not sell on 10/29. Since your box has been stained or sealed, it may be worth less. I would be interested in the box at the right price if you ever decided to sell it.
love the pflueger shipping crate. Bought one with out top at auction in the summer of 2011. paid 60 bucks. I had a piece of tempered glass cut for the tp and installed a piece of window glass part way down making it a coffee table. I have placed a collection of pflueger lures and reels along with other pflueger items . I varnished it with 3 coats of spar with wet sanding on the first two. As far as a diminished value I would beg to differ. A clean crate for use trumps filth every day.
I love this shipping crate. Would look amazing in someones lure collection for display. But I think with how hungry I am, I love the jar of Jif Peanut Butter even more.
