I was going through two bags of Jefferson nickels for a friend and came across an unusual find. The Jefferson nickel had Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and reverse and he was facing left on both sides. On one side, the date looks like 2003-P. The numeral three looks to be incomplete. On the other side, the date is 1996-P. The nickel looks genuine, has the same diameter and thickness and weighs five grams. The outer rim is smooth like that of a penny. Could anyone shed some light on whether this nickel is a counterfeit or a genuine U.S. Mint error? I have attached two scanned images of the nickel. Thanks. John

This is similar to the two headed half dollar...kennedy. If you look closely you can see the groove where it was cut along the rim. With the kennedy halves like this they have Kennedys face on both sides, they actually open up, as the middle has been hollowed out by a lathe, the object was for a magician to actually hide a smaller coin inside, and perform a magic act. You can see on you tube by searching making of magicians coins, kennedy halves.Your coin may fall upon the same concept, look at your nickel, and if it is you want to slam the coin on a hard surface on the edge of the coin, it may or may not pop open, however I can see where it was cut, so no, it's not a error

Thank you for your quick response. I had no idea that these coins existed and are used in magic acts.
