This piece was passed down on my mother's side of the family. I'm interested in trying to learn exactly what it is. It has a serial # G22999 and a marking "V" on one side. I'd appreciate any comments/suggestions on how to find out what it was originally designed for and it's approximate time/place in history.

Bayonet from the late 1800s and French or French style.
