Among Art Nouveau glasses, Ludwig Sütterlin's decorations form a completely separate group. They are characterized by simple and at the same time striking ornamentation. Sütterlin designed both decors and glass forms for the Fritz Heckert glass factory in Petersdorf (Silesia) in the period after 1900. Characteristic are decors of enamel-painted lines combined with transparent areas. A special fascination comes from glasses that were already published as being exemplary at the time of their manufacture.
In his 1901 book "Moderne Gläser" (Modern Glasses) Gustav E. Pazaurek presents some Sütterlin glasses, including the one pictured here. It can also be found in the magazine "Kunstgewerbeblatt" from 1903 together with other Sütterlin examples (last image). This vase with a height of 25,5 cm has the production number 542/4 and was produced in different color variations.
