40$ is always a good price for an antique violin. It tuned up nice. I felt lucky that it hadnt been sold. Got home and was about to rosin up what little hair was left on the bow and i noticed something swishing around from within the viol. So shake shake shake and shake some more til finally a friend assisted me in extracting what i first thought was the shell of an insect. Yuck i didnt want to even look. Its not a bug thats rattle of a rattle snake. Whoa. How strange once in multiple lifetime sort of event. Is their any folklore of such a thing. I mean im familiar with the saxophone descending from a strange obsolete instrument but the snake and violin hmmmmm. Devil’s fiddle? I cant help but chalk it up to style points mojo filters. Boo boo dust. Tombstone bullets that drink tnt. Im more modern with my appreciation of superstition being more along the lines of archetypes zodiac signs tarot cards kaballah numerology synchronicity of dubs on 4chan pepe the frog. Phenomena of historical presence due to being like an arrow pulled taut on a bow forever charged to reach its target. All tension seeks release.

What do you think the rattle tail in the fiddle means?

I don't have any clue whatsoever what it might *mean* but there sure are a bunch of possibilities aren't there, most of which are probably entertaining...??

Apparently it’s a thing, but what it means depends on who you ask. I like the warding off evil spirits theory myself; it’s got more mystique than lint, mice, or bugs.

Ahhh voudou. Mojo. Superstition. Pranksterism. Nonetheless its the first time ive even seen a rattle tail in my life, at first i thought it was a petrified bug. I looked it up online and it seems they are more on the side of good luck charms rather than objects of cursed.
Thanks MMNJ and AnythingObscure. I appreciated your input upon this strangeness.

MMNJ, Wow. That is both bizarre and a convincing explanation.
