I was given this trunk in the early 1990's, I was told that it had came from my great grandmother and that she had gotten it from her mother. I have always thought it was an interersting piece but I do not know what make it is or just how old it is.

Pretty standard metal clad steamer trunk - my guess would be 1890-1910. The slat covers and latches are standard for the time frame. The maker could be anyone of a hundred different trunk makers around the country. You may check inside for a label on the paper lining. If not, let me know what state you are in and I'll supply you with a list of known trunk makers in the area during that time frame. If you need replacement hardware (I see you are missing part of the locking mechanism and part of the latch), I'd suggest a company in Maine called Brettuns. They are great to deal with and I've found them to be reasonable. Hope that helps.
