1/4 plate ambrotype of a Civil War Sergeant Major.
The image is very clear and crisp-- lot of details to discern. Looks like he has a sword-- see the curved scabbard between his leg and the chair. Additionally, the butt of a revolver can be seen poking out of a holster at his waist.
For me the most desirable feature is the visible spur (tinted) on his tipped up boot and the mud on the boots themselves. Straight from the field to the studio!

I love these old photo's. Whether they are posed for or not.They provide a picture into the past. I have some of my great, great grandmother and my great grandmother from around 1882 and enjoy looking at the furnishings in the room even more than the people.
