I attach some photographs of this piece which I would like to learn a little more about.
I live in Toronto, Canada.
I purchased this at auction in Kingston, Ontario in 1998. (Tim Potter Auction Service) I was told that it is a late 18th Century, Norwegian Blanket Box and in all of my research, I have yet to come across any other like this one.
I was told by one antique dealer that he believes this piece is not Norwegian, due to its shape and decoration. He believes the paint work was added later and feels that the construction is not typically European either. He believes it originates somewhere on the African continent , or the islands of the Indian Ocean and South China Sea and suggests that it might be earlier than the 18th century.
I would appreciate any direction or comments anyone has as I cannot find any great detail about this special piece.
Sorry I cannot be of a great of help.
A few things that I can tell you-- it is not American.
Also the orange/ red symbols are much later than the base paint/ original construction.
Some additional construction details (joints, interior, hinges...) would be useful in dating the piece.

There are some similarities to Transylvanian marriage or shepherds chests so look those up just for reference. Good luck!
Thank you JoeyC!
I will check that out.
If you get a chance let me know what you think. You can look mine up which I posted on CW some time ago. You'll see the similarities.
Yes JoeyC,
I looked up your post form two years ago and I have to say, it is almost identical in the shape and curved lines and other details. I also did send you some photos through email showing hinges and joints - I am not sure if you saw those but I believe that we are getting close here so thank you.
