I found this little guy sitting on a shelf at a thrift store while out browsing with my sister. It practically jumped off the shelf at me. It is somewhat weightier than it looked and you can see the beautiful brush strokes. Being an artist myself, I couldn't help but be drawn to it!
This beautiful ceramic donkey is marked Italy and is numbered on his cute little pot belly. Out of curiosity at my new-found treasure, I thought I would look it up (fully anticipating to find little donkeys like this all over the place... or at the very least, in the same (or even similar) pose but colored differently...
I have searched for weeks and have found NOTHING like it. I have yet to find any other donkey figurine that is (1) colored/glazed as this one is, or at the very least (2) is in the same pose.
Try (yourself) to find another donkey figuring in this 'braying' pose... NOTHING. I have found NOTHING. Nothing EVEN 'CLOSE' to this. Would love to find out more about this piece. Thanks for any help!!!
October 4 - [update] Still NOTHING. NOTHING even close. (sigh)
I have a piece that is really similar to this one, same brush strokes, colors, etc. only my piece is a laughing donkey pulling a cart. It is all hand painted and has the same markings on the bottom as yours. It is the silliest donkey I have every seen since he has his tongue sticking out , but the the piece itself is extremely unique. If you ever find anything please email me....thanks for your pictures. I love your piece.
