The typical spittoon that I have seen is brass, this is the first one I have seen that is graniteware or enamelware. It is the gray/white swirl pattern. That is one of the most common patterns if not6 the most common. Generally not expensive probably as it is not so colorful. This one is a bit on the smaller side at 8" across. Graniteware is a bit easier to clean than brass which for a spittoon is a good thing. Not quite sure when these went out of style but they are in every western.
Should one see one of the more colorful examples at a two digit price I would recommend picking it up. I have a couple brass spittoons too so stay tuned for those.

"After the 1918 flu epidemic, both hygiene and etiquette advocates began to disparage public use of the spittoon, and use began to decline. Chewing gum replaced tobacco as the favorite chew of the younger generation. Cigarettes were considered more hygienic than spit-inducing chewing tobacco." - wiki

Thank you very much fattytail. That puts it firmly as an antique.

Thank you very much AO. I should have mentioned in my comment four years gone it was enamelware if it is a solid color. Graniteware if speckled or multi-color.
Yes you don't see these often.
