    AnythingOb…
    (1778 items)

I would have very nearly driven to Ohio and back for this item alone, but fortunately for me (?) I had many other good reasons for the trip as well! :-) :-) :-) Of all the examples in my current traffic signal collection, I did not own an actual "4-way" light -- or in other words what this one is, where four separate indications are contained in only one single signal body. (modern 4-way beacon signals still exist of course, but are now composed of four independent signal bodies with one light each, all connected together with hardware)

It is a product of the CROUSE-HINDS Company of Syracuse, NY, long time makers of a wide variety of industrial electrics in addition to signal equipment. Its body and doors are cast aluminum parts, lenses and reflector mirrors are glass, the hanger/wire entrance is cast iron, and its top and bottom hold everything together with iron tie-rods. Its doors hold 8-3/8" lenses in opposing red and amber color, behind each is a reflector assembly with light bulb socket which also swings open for servicing when needed. Originally painted green at the factory as can be seen inside it, its time 'in the wild' somewhere (I don't know where) was spent with a yellow paint job. C-H produced two slightly different 'models' of this light over the years, the "D" and "DT", this light (like many now found in collections or remaining in service) is actually a combination of parts from both models and probably has been so for a long time if not from its beginning. It was most likely made in the 1940's-50's, dating such signals with accuracy is nearly impossible due to their nature.

I will exchange its current (polycarbonate plastic) amber lens and replace the other now-missing amber with a pair of glass ones from my current collection that will match its existing glass pair of reds. Those lenses are what is now referred to as "smiley" lenses because of their inside light diffusing pattern, (pic 3) intended to maximize visibility from street level as the light hangs above.

After that, it will only be a matter of (a likely short amount of) time until I clear enough space to get to my carport ceiling and run some new electrical conduit, then it will be the centerpiece out there for FOURWAY F-150 to park underneath...?!! :-) :-) :-) :-)

When I think of four way traffic control I think back to being in Kansas during a blizzard and having to direct traffic standing out in the middle of a four way intersection. It was a shift I will never forget. I much prefer your traffic control. I learned respect for them.
