I first posted the Seal with the blue ball a while back wondering where he came from. I got several helpful suggestions but none seemed right. Well last week my daughter came across the seal with the pink ball in a shop in Wellington and wanted to know if it was the same as the one I had. Then coincidentally the very next day a new member of CW Sunking1 from NZ posted a comment on the original listing.
"These birds were made here in NZ by HUART Glassware ltd in the 1940s.
They specialised in scientific and industrial glassware... But made a sideline of novelty pieces, such as these animals."
He also provided the advertising sheet from Huart.
With that information her indoors went searching and found out that the company closed in the late 40s but the guy who made them Hugh Proctor continued making glass animals and birds for quite a long time afterwards. The photo of him making a bird is from the mid to late 60s. She found other photos of him doing the same thing at the AMP/Trade shows that are held throughout NZ. There is also a shot of an advertisement for a Jewellery shop in Upper Hutt.
So with that knowledge he is probably responsible for the glass swans from a later posting of mine.
The best news of the lot is apparently I will be getting a rather nice Christmas present this year! :)
Great Reveal !!!
They're all beautiful animals, what a wonderful glassmaker
They're all fantastically marvelous!
That's fantastic info!
So nice, smooth and beautiful. The Seal in Uranium is wow.
I recall seeing these being made at James Smith I the 1950s. The triangle base is the clue.
