I thought you should see my great-great-great grandfather and his pistol. He lived from 1782 to 1849 and was an army captain. He lived in a time when your pistol - or rather hand cannon - only had one shot. But that shot would put a really big hole in your enemy. If he was still breathing - which was very unlikely - you could grab the pistol by the barrel and use it as a club to smash your enemy's skull. After that you'd have to hope that your next enemy was delayed long enough to reload.
