Hi everybody! Once again, I come to the experts to ask for help in dating my newest acquisition.

I was just infatuated with this delicate little cameo and didn’t really care whether it was faux or not. Upon getting it home and closer inspection, I believe the black area may actually be onyx as it doesn’t look like lucite. As for the cameo itself…I have no idea what the material is, but it does seem to be applied although I can’t find any glue. The four teeny tiny pearls are TBD. There are no mold marks or peeling and they have remarkable sheen.

What really fascinated me though was the clasp. I’ve seen all kinds of clasps, but never this one.

The pendant itself measures 1”L x 3/4”W. The total chain length is just under 16”. There are no maker’s marks on it. The chain itself is silver toned. The pendant is silver toned while the leaves are gold toned. I tested it with my super magnet and there is a minute bit of attraction. However, I haven’t cleaned it yet and did notice a few areas that may be a challenge. Don’t know if that affects anything or not with a magnet. I’ll post again once cleanup is complete, although that always makes me nervous!

So folks, older, newer or somewhere in between? Thank you for looking!

I'm not an expert but I saw two how the clasp worked in joining together. I guess you would need a mirror to take it off. I love the finer filigree work in the pendant and leading to it. The clasp is new to me also, a little mystery in this beautiful necklace !~

Ms.CrystalShip: Eileen, I love it when you’re the first to comment! Wish I was that on top of things! After cleaning it up, definitely not sterling but some base metal. And the black portion of the cameo I now believe is glass vs. Onyx. It does have a very tiny bezel cut around the edge I failed to see until it was cleaned. Still don’t know what the actual cameo material is…may be lucite?

Regardless, am still fascinated with the clasp. Have scoured the Internet the past several days and not found anything like it. It is a pretty, delicate piece of costume jewelry, just may not be as old as I originally thought!

As always, I appreciate your comments. Hope all is well with you and yours!

PhilDMorris Thank you for your input! I’m glad I’m not alone in not recognizing this clasp! And one would need a mirror to put in on/remove…unless they are really steady, which I am not.

The filigree is extremely fine for a costume piece. It’s almost web-like, so was surprised after getting all the gunk off it really was a base metal. And determined the black portion of the cameo is probably glass rather than Onyx. Even has a tiny bezel cut around the edge. The cameo itself is probably lucite, but truly am clueless.

Thanks for your comment. As always, it is greatly appreciated!
