I recently purchased this 1940's Budweiser Bar sign and 1960's or 70's Schaefer Beer sign from an estate. As near as I can tell, the ballast units don't work anymore, and the cord on both show evidence of dry rot. New LED lights are more lightweight, energy efficient, safer and burn cooler than the original equipment. Is it heresy, or will replacing obsolete / dangerous components adversely affect the value of these signs as desirable collectibles?

Personally, I prefer old signs with their original lighting when possible, but that's just me. All their parts are still available as a rule including those little ballasts, and 'close' is usually fine for replacements. If you decide to go the LED route anyway, please consider simply *adding* it while leaving the old stuff intact in there -- good luck and Welcome to CW! :-) :-) :-)
