I'm actually reasonably certain that's what this sturdy chunk of solid glass IS, anyway -- a rest and holder for old 'quill type' pens, so one could be set down for a moment on the desk without blotting it completely clean, thus reducing the risk of leaving ink spots and stains on the desk itself. I'm guessing about the "antique" part for sure -- I suppose things like it could still be used by calligraphers and artists for instance, but I do think I've seen similar things displayed along with antique office equipment, so there we have it. :-) :-) :-)
Measuring 5-1/4" x 2-3/8" x 1-1/8", three pen sized grooves along its width with a deeper and wider one across the middle. The bottom has a narrow raised rim around its edge. Various swirls and 'imperfections' to the glass on its edges and bottom suggest that it was a molded piece, there are no actual markings.
i never would have guessed what this was for! thanks for demystifying...
