I bought this watch from the German janitor in my school when I was 17 years old...a very long time ago. He sold it to me for $5 as he had no kids, and I always wore a watch and chain...even then. I took it to the Bowery Jeweler's Exchange where I had my mentor. He directed me across the street to a guy who could fix it. That man offered to buy it immediately. It is a fusee movement.

I am recently told it is a contemporary fake. Does anyone have an opinion?

Yes, I had it fixed and it ran. I did wind it on occasion. I have kept it these many years but was afraid to wear it due to my perception that the fusee would easily break. I have owned it for for over forty years. There would have been no interest in faking such an item at the time I bought it.

Can you give me a guess at its value?

How would one go about finding out if it is genuine or not?

Most Bookstores Have The Cooksey Shugert Books on Watches. If you dont want to buy, you can look at it there. It will help. Beware of Most. Not all. Most. Ive had dealers Tell me all Kinds Of B.S. Even though i knew, Exactly what i had. I would Listen to theyre B.S. anyhow, for a good laugh...... I dont know what you have, But i like it!

Your watch is Swiss, early 19th century, and not of Breguets manufacture. Names of prominent makers were often used on watches that were not their products in order to make them more desirable (think todays fake Rolex). The watch is quite collectible, and would bring substantially more than your purchase price today.
