Looks like it sat on the top of the wood stove and you put water in it, but then I could see it sitting on the floor in a bar as a spittoon.

I would tend to go with the spitoon. If you put water in it, by it's design the water would steam up the bottom of the top and condense down back on the stove making a real mess. I also think it probably had a graniteware liner originaly, to make it easier to clean, and to keep the iron from rusting.

I can also see it being a humidifier; sits on old wood stove with water in it. Is it all cast iron; looks to be about 14" diameter. Could also be used to receive cigarette butts; just fill bottom with sand. Whatever it is, I like it.

This is most definitely a spittoon and NOT a humidifier! I have been collecting spittoons & cuspidors for some forty years, have amassed a collection exceeding 350 pieces in all formats of glass, china, porcelain, some dating back to the 16th & 17th century & also some metal figural types & 'hidden spittoon' footstools. I have this EXACT same spittoon which is a two piece job and made of aluminum. It dates from the 1st quarter of the 20th century. Hope this clears up the "mystery".
