A customer referral called me about caning a couple of chairs. I looked at photos and agreed to do them. They were quickly nicknamed "The Chairs from He*l." Turned out the seat had been caned and the legs, back, and arms were glued onto the seat. (How did I miss that? I had caned seats before, but they were attached to their other parts by screws.) My husband very kindly removed enough wood so that I could at least partley reach the holes that were completely inaccessible. Some I ended up caning by pulling the cane through the tiniest holes (that my husband didn't want to uncover completely) with an upholstery needle..
I tried to find out about the chairs. The owner said she had bought them in a department store in Washington DC decades ago. She knew nothing else about them. The only marking on them was the word "Itali"branded on the bottom of the seat. I have no idea if the spelling was accidental or on purpose. Does anyone have any ideas about these chairs? I would be much obliged!
