It's an amazing piece and i have done countless research on it.The carving is original as it is held in place using the same method as the rest of the piece,if you look closely you can see in some of the flowers that in the middle of the flower there is iron nails with a brass washer type ring.My research brought me to the idea that it may be spanish but i have trawled through archives and past auctions and sites and all centuries and though my findings leaves me in the 15th to late 16th century.Teak was used in the 16th century in india, the wood planks are over an inch thick and i work in building and am used to lifting but this is a struggle to lift with two men.I read that from the 16th century on they stopped using such heavy wood as it got scarcer and they started making more elegant and lightweight furniture, also because food was stored in them that it was harder for peasants to steal because of it's weight, which after trying to lift it i agree was a good method!!!! Out of all the numerous cabinets, cupboards, chests, coffers, armoires and so on i have looked at i found one item on 1STDIBS.COM called an Antique 16th Century Indian Food Storage Cabinet. Although the quality and strapping is of poorer quality but the iron and the hook hinges and ware to cross piece of wood going into the cupboard are the same.Maybe i am being bias because i own this item but it Certainly has a presence and it is amazingly constructed,it still holds an amazing smell inside, you can still smell the timber which makes me think it could be teak as teak is one of the most resilient woods to salt water and weathering and maintains its smell for a long time.I would love if anyone out there knows more than i do regarding it,I love it and would like to understand more about it so any help would be FANTASTIC.Thank you.x

What a beautiful piece! I also have a cabinet that comes from unknown origins, but my landlord seems to think it's from Spain. I just posted some pictures of it. Go take a look! It is also heavy, like yours.

I found a similar cabinet to this on Rubylane.com. It has an almost $2,000 price tag on it.
