New York, Pennsylvania & Ohio RR brass top, bell bottom railroad lantern made by the Adams & Westlake Co., of Chicago, IL, in the early 1880's. This classic, no. 39, double-guarded lantern is prominently marked N.Y.P. & O.R.R., with early patent dates, the latest being 1873, stamped into the underside of the base with the manufacturer's hallmark. The flashed ruby globe is embossed NYP&ORR in heavy relief. This lantern retains much of its original tin plating and was likely used very little on the railroad.
