Atlantic & Great Western RR brass top, bellbottom railroad lantern made by the Adams & Westlake Co., of Chicago, IL, in the mid 1870's. This early A&W double-guard, no. 39 model, is boldly embossed on the lid reflector A. & GT. W. R.R. The underside of the base is stamped with early Wm. Westlake patent dates, the latest of which is 1873. The chimney assembly features the early, sliding globe height adjusting assembly. The clear, extended base globe is boldly embossed A & G W RR. This broad gauge RR went into receivership in the mid-1870's and was reorganized as the New York, Pennsylvania & Ohio RR around 1880, making this lantern model one of the last purchased by the former company.
