I bought this when I saw it at a real bargain, it only ran so-so. I then realizing it only needed maintinance, I disassembled it for a good cleaning, oiling, and lube job. Then to my surprise on the underside of the body I found initials and the year 1974 written with a paint pen. This is when my couriosity relly peaked, so I got back in touch with the gentlemen that sold me the engine. He told me that he had a good friend that worked for the Marx Corporation in the design department, and that his friend had designed this engine for the company but it had never made it to production. Sadly he told me that his friend had since past away. Now knowing somethings about Marx and their design dept. they used what they had on hand at the time they were desinging future products. The best I can tell is that the body is an 0-4-0, the drivetrain is from a 4-6-2/333. The drivetrain linkage is a little of all Marx engines. The engine does have a smoke unit, headlight, and an E unit, and after a little maint. runs as if it were brand new. The tender I have coupled with this engine is from my private collection, and is a Lionel. No tender to the best of my knowlegde was ever designed for this engine as to the reason being the engine never made it to production. I will try to find and document more information as I come upon it. If for some reason anyone has more information about this prototype they may email me @ cchaste@msn.com and reference it as Marx Camelback Prototype, Thank you. I hope you enjoy looking at the photos as much as I do owning this part of Marx history.
