Allegheny Valley RR brass top, bellbottom railroad lantern made by the Adams & Westlake Co., of Chicago, IL, in themid-1870's. This single-guard, no. 39 model, is boldly embossed on the lid reflector A.V.R.R. The underside of the base is stamped with the A&W hallmark that includes several patent dates, the latest of which is 1873. This lantern is unique among A&W no.39 models because the base is 8 inches in diameter, and flatter (not dished) The signal green, extended base globe is etched PENN..LINE. This RR was an early constituent via lease, then merger, into the Pennsylvania RR.
